Dr. Corso's SMART (SMART HOME * MEDIA * ADAPTIVE * REHAB * TECHNOLOGY) Lab's research and mission focuses on increasing independence through Smart Home Technology for individuals who have severe physical and complex communication needs. The SMART Lab is currently conducting research with Smart Frames (i.e., Amazon Echo Frames) as a form of assistive technology to increase independence.
The SMART Lab currently has two projects going on focusing on the use of Smart Frames as Assistive technology.
Expanding research on teaching the use of Smart Speakers with Voice Control (SSVCs) to individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication to include additional universally designed platforms (i.e., Google, Apple, etc).

A case study will be conducted to investigate the benefits or challenges of using smart frames compared to Smart Speakers with Voice Control (SSVCs). In addition, this study will look at the impact of using Smart Frames on the independence of individuals who are living with severe or complex physical disabilities (i.e., spinal cord injury). There is limited research currently on the use of wearable technology, more specifically smart frames, with individuals who have physical disabilities.
