For my Dissertation Study a mixed-methods study with individuals who use speech generating devices and their caregivers was conducted to investigate the length of time it takes to install smart home technology equipment, teach basic, moderate, and advanced SSVC applications through the InViSTA (Independence via Smart Technology Activation) Program, the impact of smart home technology on independence for individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication, and participant patterns of SSVC applications across four domains (i.e., environmental controls, information gathering, recreation/leisure, and communication).
A Focus group was done with Individual Education Plan Team Members' to gain their perceptions on Smart Home Technology for Individuals with Multiple Disabilities.
For my Pre-Dissertation Study a series of interviews with individuals who have spinal cord injury and are super users of Smart Home Technology were conducted to understand how Smart Home Technology is being used as a form of assistive technology.
As a foundation for my research on Smart Home Technology as a new form of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities, I did a scoping review to see what information was available in the literature. This process took about a year to complete.
Exploring new interface design options for Speech Generating Devices with the Engineering department. Focus is on promoting social communication and increasing speed of communication.
Exploring Exoskeletons with the Engineering department as a new form of support to promote direct selection for individuals with complex communication needs.
Exploring the use of VR for community-based instruction. VR could be used as a PREality and a bridge between the classroom and the community environment for individuals with disabilities (Fang, 2017).
You do not need to be a reader to experience literacy! Students with severe and complex needs can experience literacy regardless of cognitive ability or decoding abilities through modified literacy, socialization, Mobility Opportunities via Education (MOVE curriculum) and motivation.
A social venture was developed to provide information on Smart Home Technology and the potential impact on independence for individuals with multiple disabilities. This social venture tied for 3rd place in the Ohio University Center for Entrepreneurship's 2020 Expo Pitch Competition. Click on the link to watch the trailer. The link for the full submission is located under the information on the Pitch in the "Awards/Honors" Tab.
